Hope for the Hypocrites

Dear Mosaic Family,

We live in a culture that is deeply offended by hypocrisy, and yet ironically wants to relativize and redefine reality. The literal use of the word hypocrite actually came from the theater and refers to a play actor. The actors would put on masks and do their best to convincingly portray a character. The goal was to make the audience suspend their disbelief, and believe they were something they were not. Over time the word came to be used as a euphemism for people whose conduct was out of step with their beliefs and the truth about reality.

You often hear the accusation, “I don’t believe in Christianity, because the church is full of hypocrites.” So, is that a fair assessment? Tomorrow we’ll be looking at Galatians 2:11-21 where Paul recounts an instance when he had to call out hypocrisy in the church. He tells Peter, and the others in Antioch, that their conduct is "out of step with the truth of the Gospel." So where did they go wrong?

Paul’s illustration will help us understand what hypocrisy is, what it isn’t, where it comes from, and how to fix it. We’ll also see that hypocrisy is something we’re all in danger of falling into, and learn how to proactively guard against it.

Please join us for worship this Sunday at 9:30a.m., 11:15a.m., or 5p.m. as we continue our series in Galatians, The Gospel (verified)!

In Christ,
Pastor Shane
