Hard Heart Toward God: What Zechariah 7 Reveals

A hard heart toward God does not usually announce itself. It shows up in the question underneath the question: Haven't I done enough? Zechariah 7 exposes the difference between religious performance and genuine relationship with God, and it names the only thing that has ever actually softened a human heart: the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Does God Care About Your Religious Rituals, or Something Else?

In December 518 BC, a delegation from the town of Bethel traveled to Jerusalem with a practical question for the prophet Zechariah: should they keep fasting in the fifth month as they had done for nearly 68 years? The fast had begun after the Babylonian army destroyed Solomon's temple in 586 BC. For nearly seven decades, the people had mourned, fasted, and asked God to restore what had been lost. Now the temple was almost rebuilt. Was it finally time to stop?

God's answer was not a yes or a no. It was a question that cut straight through the ritual to the heart behind it: "Was it for me that you fasted?" The people of Bethel had kept this fast for generations, and God had never commanded it. They had invented the tradition themselves, maintained it faithfully, and now wanted to know if they had done it long enough. They were treating God exactly the way you treat a requirement you want to be done with.

Pastor Jan Vezikov framed it plainly in this sermon: ritualism says, "God, tell me what I need to do to get you off my back." Relationship says, "Lord, tell me what I get to do to get closer to you." The question "haven't we done enough?" reveals which one is actually driving you. Take a few minutes today and ask yourself honestly: when you think about church, prayer, or Scripture, does your first instinct sound more like obligation or desire?



What Does a Hard Heart Toward God Actually Look Like?

Zechariah 7:12 names the result of Israel's religious performance directly: "They made their hearts diamond hard lest they should hear the law." The image is precise. A diamond is the hardest natural substance on earth. It cannot be scratched, bent, or reshaped by ordinary force. Israel had not drifted from God accidentally. They had hardened themselves deliberately against the law because the law was asking something of them they did not want to give: their actual hearts.

Pastor Jan identified the diagnostic question the text is really asking: do you treat God like a spare tire? You keep him around just in case, hidden in the back, brought out only in emergencies. The rest of the time, religious ritual is enough to maintain the arrangement. You fast, attend, tithe, and show up; not because you want God, but because the minimum keeps things manageable. Jesus put it even more plainly in Mark 7:6, quoting Isaiah: "This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me."

The Pharisees fasted. They tithed. They kept visible, elaborate religious disciplines. But Jesus called them whitewashed tombs: beautiful on the outside, full of dead bones within (Matthew 23:27). Fake news, as Pastor Jan put it, leads to fakeness. The lie that God only cares about behavior produces people who manage behavior while leaving the heart entirely untouched. The honest step here is not to do more religion. It is to stop and ask whether any of what you are already doing is actually for God at all.



How Does the Gospel Soften What Religion Never Could?

The second half of Zechariah 7 does not leave the diagnosis without an answer. God's command to the people was to "render true judgments, show kindness and mercy to one another" and to "not oppress the widow, the fatherless, the sojourner, or the poor" (Zechariah 7:9–10). These are not new rules added on top of the old ones. They are the outward evidence of something that has already happened on the inside: a heart that has actually been changed.

The question is: how does that change happen? Not by trying harder. Pastor Jan was direct: you do not become a good person from the outside in. It is inside out. The Gospel is the announcement that Jesus Christ, the only person who ever perfectly obeyed God's law from the heart, took the full judgment that law demands onto himself on the cross. When you break the civil law in Boston (say, by parking under a no-parking sign) there is no mercy. The tow truck driver does not care about your grocery bags or your kids. But when you break God's holy law, because of what Christ did, all you have to do is come with a broken heart and say, from the heart: I'm sorry. God, I repent. And the record is cleared entirely, as if the transgression never happened.

The moment you understand that the mercy shown to you was purchased at that cost, something shifts. You do not extend kindness to the widow and the orphan and the stranger because the law tells you to. You do it because you have received something you did not deserve, and it has made you a different kind of person. That is the difference between a diamond heart and a devoted one.

How Does Fake Worship Become Real? Three Honest Markers

1. The Question Behind Your Discipline

Ask: Does your approach to prayer, fasting, church attendance, or Scripture feel like a requirement to satisfy or a relationship to deepen?

Why it matters: The people of Bethel fasted for 68 years and never asked whether God had commanded it. Spiritual disciplines are means to an end (drawing closer to God) not ends in themselves. When the question becomes "have I done enough?", the discipline has become ritual.

2. What Fasting Reveals

Ask: When you fast or deny yourself something, does it intensify your hunger for God, or does it mostly make you irritable?

Why it matters: Pastor Jan described fasting as one of the great "fluff revealers." When your stomach is empty, your real self comes out. The Pharisees fasted publicly for reputation. Jesus said the fast that God honors is hidden, private, and directed toward the Father alone (Matthew 6:16–18). What comes out when the comfort is removed tells you something about what is actually in there.

3. How You Treat the Vulnerable

Ask: Do you care about the widow, the orphan, the immigrant, the poor; not as a category, but as specific people in your actual life?

Why it matters: God told Israel in Zechariah 7:10 not to oppress these groups, and in Malachi 3:5 he warned that he would stand as a swift witness against those who do. James 1:27 calls this the mark of religion that is "pure and undefiled before God." You can be moral without being pious, but you cannot be pious without being moral. How you treat the least protected people around you is the test of whether the Gospel has actually changed your heart.

Finding Real Worship in the Longwood Area

The Door Is Still Open

A diamond heart blocks out everything it does not want to hear. Zechariah 7:13 describes the consequence with terrible symmetry: "As I called, and they would not hear, so they called, and I would not hear, says the Lord of hosts." There is a moment, Jesus warned in Matthew 25, when the door closes and does not open again. The hard heart toward God is not a permanent condition; it is a choice, made daily, that either softens or calcifies. The Gospel is the only force that has ever actually melted one.

  • Because God is a person, not a system. Ritual without heart treats God as something to be managed or appeased (what Pastor Jan called a "cold transaction"). God does not need appeasement; he is just. What he is looking for, as Jesus said in John 4:23, is worshippers who will worship him in spirit and in truth. A performance that bypasses the heart bypasses the only thing God is actually after.
