Advent: Peace
Dear Mosaic Boston Family,
Are you at peace? To even begin to answer the question, we need to agree on a definition. What is peace? Is peace more than the absence of conflict?
The word peace in the Hebrew Scriptures is the word "Shalom." Shalom means infinitely more than just the absence of conflict. Shalom means "wholeness" or "completion." Shalom includes perfect justice. Shalom is the way things should be--the way everything should be. When Shalom reigns, you and I become the way we ought to be, the way we were created to be. Every single one of us knows we are not currently the best versions of ourselves, somehow incomplete. Where ever did we get the idea that we are meant to be better, more whole? Where ever did we get the idea that the world, as it now is, is not as it ought to be? Yet, the idea is indelibly imbedded on our hearts.
In Isaiah 9, Jesus is prophecies to be the "Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore." Join us tomorrow as we meditate on how to live life between two Advents, between the time that Jesus came to start the process of Shalom and the time that Shalom will come in its fullness. Fortunately, despite the lack of Shalom in the world, we can still experience Shalom in our hearts, as "the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:7).
Praying for you,
Pastor Jan
