Jesus among the Christian Cults

Dear Mosaic Boston Family,

Thought experiment: your door bell rings, you go to the door, and two gentlemen in white shirts are at the door. They introduce themselves as elders from the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter-day Saints. They ask to be invited in, to tell you more about their faith. What do you do? As loving Christians, we are tempted to be welcoming, doesn't the Bible command us to be hospitable? Or perhaps, this would be a great opportunity to share the Gospel with them. Indeed, Scripture does command us to be hospitable and to share the Gospel. However, Scripture is also abundantly clear that we must "contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints" (Jude 3), and 2 John 1:9-11 actually includes the following statement:

"Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God. Whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house or give him any greeting, for whoever greets him takes part in his wicked works."

"Do not receive them into your house or give him any greeting"? Seems a little extreme, no? It seems extreme because we don't understand how eternally destructive false doctrines are, because they are ultimately influenced by demons.

1 Timothy 4:1 says, "Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons." Join us tomorrow as we continue our series, "Jesus among other gods" by looking at four characteristics of Christian cults, so we can grow in spiritual discernment.

Praying for you!
Pastor Jan
