Tasty God >>>>>>> Tasty Burger

Dear Mosaic Family,

Our appetites aren't just physical, we know this. We have physical appetites for food, yes, but we also have existential appetites for beauty, friendship, love, wisdom, etc. Perhaps the better word to use is desire. We are creatures of desire. In our culture, not many people talk this way. We just assume we are rational beings. We like to think we do what makes most sense. But if we're truly honest with ourselves, we all too often rationalize harmful desires. Desire overrides the brain. We are driven by our desires. Thus, we overeat, over-drink, overspend, overdose.

Tomorrow, we'll be talking about mastering our desires like Lions, to follow the Lord like Lambs. Scripture tells us: "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in path of righteousness, for His name's sake" (Psalm 23:1-3). When we lead ourselves to follow the Lord, we realize we aren't just creatures of physical desire. Our souls long to be spiritually satisfied. No physical thing can satisfy the spiritual desires of our souls. When we're following the Lord, we shall not want, because He satisfies our greatest desires.

The only true way to master our harmful desires is to counter them with healthful desires. How can we learn to crave that which is best for us? Through the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and by the power of the Holy Spirit, God can recalibrate your taste buds, physical and spiritual. Only when this happens, can we talk about "tasting God."

Psalm 34:8 says: "Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good!" There is a seeing and tasting that is infinitely deeper than physical. Tasting God, who is supremely beautiful to the heart and exquisitely sweet to the soul, precedes seeing God.

I'll leave you with one of my favorite quotes from Jonathan Edwards:

“God is the highest good of the reasonable creature. The enjoyment of him is our proper; and is the only happiness with which our souls can be satisfied. To go to heaven, fully to enjoy God, is infinitely better than the most pleasant accommodations here. Better than fathers and mothers, husbands, wives, or children, or the company of any, or all earthly friends. These are but shadows; but the enjoyment of God is the substance. These are but scattered beams; but God is the sun. These are but streams; but God is the fountain. These are but drops, but God is the ocean.”

Can't wait to worship with you tomorrow as we study Galatians 5:16-26

With Love,
Pastor Jan
