Getting Older or Growing Up?

Dear Mosaic Family,

How long have you been a Christian? How would you rate your maturity as a Christian? Getting older and growing up should go hand in hand, but that’s not always the case. A child who is getting older but not showing signs of growth is a major cause for concern!

The church in Corinth was aging, but they weren’t growing up. In 1 Corinthians 3:1, the apostle Paul calls them "infants in Christ." By this point, they should have been feeding themselves and learning to feed others, but instead, the young church was still filled with baby Christians. Few things bring more joy to a home than a newborn baby, but few things bring more concern than a baby who is failing to develop.

Scripture assumes a trajectory of growth in our lives as Christians. If we don’t hit certain developmental stages over time, that’s a sign that something is wrong. Unfortunately, many Christians today are trapped in spiritual infancy. This failure of maturity comes from a failure of identity, and it leads to a failure of our witness.

Please join us this Sunday as we look at 1 Corinthians 6:1-11 and see Paul address another major problem in the Prodigal Church of Corinth. Their lack of maturity was tearing them apart and leaving them defeated. Paul calls them to repent, but also to remember who they are. They were all once trapped in hopeless lives of sin, but now they’ve been saved and given a profound new identity in Jesus Christ.

In Christ,
Pastor Shane
