And you shall call his name Jesus
Dear Mosaic Family,
This year we are spending Advent in the Gospel of Matthew. Last week we looked at Jesus’ family tree. Next week, we’ll look at the story of the wise men who followed the star to Bethlehem. This week, we get to look at the birth of Jesus Christ!
Before Jesus was born, an angel was sent to Joseph to instructed him to take Mary as his wife, and to name her child Jesus. The name Jesus simply means the LORD (YHWH) saves. Joseph is told that the child will also be called Immanuel (which means, God with us). These names encapsulated both His purpose and His true identity. Jesus is fully God, and fully man, and through his sacrificial death he fully paid the debt of God’s people to save us from our sins.
Jesus was born Lord and Savior, and he lived up to His name perfectly. He descended from heaven, humbled Himself, and poured out His life to the point of death, even death on a cross. As a result, God the Father bestowed on Him “the name that is above all names” (Phil 2:5-11). During this season of Advent we marvel at the great love and humility which led Christ to take on flesh and go to the cross, we also anticipate the great joy that will come when He returns in glory to raise us up and make all things new.
Please join us this Sunday at 9:30am or 11:30am as we examine the beautiful story of Jesus’ brith in Matthew 1:18-25. We will also be celebrating communion together and having a baptism after our 11:30 service!
Praying for you,
Pastor Shane
