Newsletter: Proclaim the King’s Excellencies (come what may)
Dear Mosaic Family,
What has faithfully following Jesus Christ cost you?
This is a serious question. This is a sobering question. I'd like you to give it significant thought and prayer as we prepare to study Mark 6:7-29 this Sunday.
In our passage, John the Baptist, about whom Jesus said "among those born of women there has arisen no one greater" (clearly Jesus ranks his followers), proclaims the Gospel to "King" Herod, and pays the ultimate sacrifice for his proclamation when Herod has John beheaded, and has the head paraded on a platter at a party.
Why in the world would John lose his head for preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ? Why would John lose his life for proclaiming that Jesus forgives sin and offers eternal life? Why would John pay with his blood for offering God's grace to Herod? Because to preach the true Gospel, you must tell the audience they have transgressed God's specific Law. That's exactly what John did when he told Herod: "It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife."
John's message to Herod was simple: Herod, there's a King above you, with a Law greater than the law of your desires. You've transgressed the 7th commandment. Repent of your sin and submit to King Jesus, and His reign and rule. God made you. God has authority over you. God governs His world through His Law. Repent and submit to Christ.
For Christ to procure mercy for us, entailed a gruesome, gory, grim sacrifice. It demanded a crucifixion. Jesus was crucified for proclaiming the TRUTH. Therefore, we shouldn’t be surprised, but should actually expect, that when we faithfully, boldly, kindly proclaim Christ, this will come at a cost. For some of us, it may even require death itself, just like our Lord, just like John the Baptist, just like most of the Apostles.
If you fear man over God, you might keep your life, but lose your soul. If you fear God more than man, you might lose your head, but not your soul.
Looking forward to worshiping with you!
Pastor Jan
