Newsletter: The King Satisfies
Dear Mosaic Family,
The twelve disciples have just returned from an exhausting mission trip, chock full of preaching, exorcisms, and healings. Seeing their exhaustion, both spiritual (ministering to lots of people with lots of needs) and physical ("they had no leisure even to eat"), Jesus tells them "Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while." As they land in this desolate place, they are met with thousands of people with thousands of needs. Jesus, full of compassion for the crowd, begins to "teach them many things." The disciples, probably getting a little frustrated and hungry (hangry!), ask Jesus to send everyone away so the crowds (and disciples) could finally have something to eat.
Then Jesus tells the disciples the absolute last thing they wanted to hear: "You give them something to eat."
I wonder what Peter was thinking at this moment (and the "Sons of Thunder" for that matter). Give them something to eat?! Jesus, you know how hungry we are! Jesus, you know we haven't had a chance to eat properly for days now! Jesus, you promised us a break from ministry! Jesus, you're calling us to do the impossible!
The Lord loves when we give out of our poverty. Remember the poor widow, whom Jesus observed sacrificing two small copper coins into the temple offering box? Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the offering box. For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.”
The Lord loves when we give out of our poverty, because He loves to supply everything we lack.
The Apostle Paul famously begged God to remove his "thorn in the flesh." The Lord said no. Paul writes, "But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong."
Join us Sunday as we meditate upon Mark 6:30-44, where King Jesus commands the impossible, supplies what he commands, satisfies thousands, and teaches all about humble dependence upon God.
Looking forward to worshiping with you!
Pastor Jan
