E Pluribus Unum: Out of the Many, One.

Dear Mosaic Family,

The Latin phrase "E Pluribus Unum (Out of the Many, One)" was adopted by Congress in 1782 and served as the national motto, until 1956, when the motto "In God we trust" was officially adopted. Both of these mottos are still on our currency and seals. Unfortunately, neither of these mottos seem to be accurate descriptions of our current state of affairs. 

As we continue our series, "Prodigal Church" through 1st Corinthians, we see that the startup church has become rife with division. The One has turned into the Many, as they begin to lose their trust in God, and start to place it in leaders. Competing cliques are threatening to tear the church apart. How does God help them heal?

He doesn't tell them to unite for unity's sake.
He doesn't tell them to get rid of doctrine and convictions.
He doesn't tell them to pursue unity through an absolute tolerance of all perspectives.
He doesn't call them to be unified in spite of truth, but by the truth.

Which truth? He calls them to be united by "the word of the cross" which is "the power of God" (1 Corinthians 1:18). The key to true unity in a church community isn't to pretend we don't really believe what we say we believe. The key to true unity is to believe (together) the Gospel and let the truth, that Jesus Christ was crucified for us, become our rallying cry. 

Join us tomorrow as we look at passages from 1 Corinthians 1-4, and meditate on the word of the cross, which holds the power of God to save, heal, and unify.
