New Series: Prodigal Church, a series in 1 Corinthians

Dear Mosaic Family,

This summer we are going through a series in 1 Corinthians called "Prodigal Church."

Why call it "Prodigal Church"? Because the nascent church in the city of Corinth is going through an identity crisis. Corinth, like Boston, was a diverse, influential, thriving, world-class city. It was the center of business, education, and technological advancement. People from all over the Roman Empire would flock to Corinth to make a life, and a name for themselves. Like Boston, Corinth was also a godless city. Christians were under immense pressure to capitulate to the culture instead of creating a new one.

The church in Corinth was going through an identity crisis, comprised of people going through their own identity crises. Who are we? How can we follow Jesus faithfully in this city?

We live in a culture that obsesses over identity. Who am I? How do I fit in this world? "Identity" language is the heart language of our culture. We base our identity on our sexuality, politics, dietary preferences, work out routine. We want to be known for our education, career accomplishments, where we live, what we own. We become products of the names we've attached to ourselves, like your neighbor's Subaru with the dozens of bumper stickers.

Our culture tells us to repudiate the oppressive idea that someone else can tell us who we are and who to be. Look deep inside yourself. What do you want? What do you want to do? Do that. Do you. You can be anything you want to be (which is patently false). So we set out on a path to find ourselves, by obeying our desires. The problem is, we have more than one desire, and they're often competing and incompatible. "I want to be married and I want to be single." "I want kids and I want to be free to travel the world." "I want a six-pack and I want a six-pack of beer."

Join us tomorrow as we look at 1 Corinthians 1:1-9, and think about the difference between achieving an identity, and receiving an identity; the difference between naming yourself, and receiving a name from a loving God.

Praying for you!
Pastor Jan
