Beware the Lies of the Antichrist

Dear Mosaic Family,

As we continue our series in 1 John, we come across one of the most cryptic and least understood of all texts in Scripture, where the Apostle John warns us about the antichrist and antichrists.

He writes: "Children, it is the last hour, and as you have heard that Antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have come. Therefore we know that it is the last hour" (1 John 2:18).

Who is the Antichrist to come? Throughout church history, some Christians have nominated ecclesial figures for the title of Antichrist. Martin Luther, John Calvin, Cotton Mather, William Tyndale, and many other Protestant leaders have considered the office of the papacy to be the Antichrist. Some have even directly accused particular popes, from Leo X to Pope Benedict XVI, of being the Antichrist. Others have pointed to political figures as befitting the role: Nero Caesar, Napoleon, Hitler, Henry Kissinger, Mikhail Gorbachev (whose forehead birthmark was considered the "mark of the the beast" by some).

However, the Apostle John's emphasis isn't on the one particular Antichrist to come, but on the many antichrists who have already come, and the diabolical lies they spew. What are these lies? What are the signs of these antichrists? Join us tomorrow as we study 1 John 2:18-27.

With Love,
Pastor Jan
