Christian Detachment
Dear Mosaic Family,
Once we become followers of Jesus, citizens of His Kingdom, we become spiritual sojourners in the world, resident aliens—in the world, but not of it. The principle of "in, not of, the world" is to apply to everything we do. We are to care about this world, but not too much. We are to care about this life, but not too much. We are to care about our jobs/careers, but not too much. We are to care about money, but not too much. We are to care about our relationships, but not too much. If you're hearing this for the first time, you might be startled: "I thought we are called to love people as ourselves." Exactly. As yourself. You are to love yourself, but not too much.
This principle is articulated in most startling fashion in 1 Corinthians 7:29-31, where Scripture tells us: "29 This is what I mean, brothers: the appointed time has grown very short. From now on, let those who have wives live as though they had none, 30 and those who mourn as though they were not mourning, and those who rejoice as though they were not rejoicing, and those who buy as though they had no goods, 31 and those who deal with the world as though they had no dealings with it. For the present form of this world is passing away."
The Apostle Paul isn't telling married people they are to divorce; he's saying: treat marriage as it is—temporary. Treat the sadness of life as it is—temporary. Treat the joys of this world as they are—temporary. Treat your business dealings in this world as they are—temporary. "The appointed time has grown very short" ... "For the present form of this world is passing away." For non-Christians, "Life is short" is usually the reason to get the most out of this life. For the Christian "Life is short" is the reason we are to develop a certain "detachment" to the physical world, and view everything we do through an eternal perspective. Join us tomorrow as we study Matthew 6:18-24, where Jesus helps us develop an eternal perspective/spiritual detachment toward money.
With Love,
Pastor Jan
