Your Father Sees
Dear Mosaic Family,
"If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?" If I eat a delicious meal or go on vacation and don't post on social media did it even happen? We live in a day when it's easier than ever to share our lives with people. It's easier than ever to build an audience, get "followers", share content. There are many valid reasons to do so. However, like with anything in our fallen world, there are many sinful reasons as well. As Ecclesiastes says, vanity of vanities, it's all vanity. Like with anything in life, there's a temptation with social media to be driven by the applause of people. This drive isn't new with social media, it's just been amplified x fold.
Jesus knows our temptation to be driven by the applause of people, even in our walk with God. To live for the proverbial pat on the back. This is exactly what He addresses in Matthew 6:1-18, where He says, "Beware of practicing your righteousness before people in order to be seen by them..." Jesus, specifically, addresses our giving, prayer, and fasting. He doesn't focus on "how we give, pray, fast" as much as "why we give, pray, fast." Do you do so to delight people (thereby flatter ego) or to delight your Father? Jesus calls us to give in secret, pray in secret, and fast in secret. He calls us to make sacrifices that no on sees. Except for Him. He sees. Your Heavenly Father sees. And this is more than enough.
Three times in the text we are told "And your Father who sees in secret will reward you." What's the reward? We're not told. However, as any child knows, the presence and focused attention of a parent, and specifically their delight is reward enough. Once the Father's delight becomes your greatest motivator, you're well on your way to building a life of spiritual authenticity and integrity.
With Love,
Pastor Jan
