Guess we're talking about circumcision

Dear Mosaic Family,

Most of the signs and symbols in the Bible make sense: baptism as cleansing, the rainbow symbolizes peace, the Lord's Supper symbolizing body and blood. But what's up with circumcision?

Tomorrow, as we continue our "Jesus in Genesis" series with Genesis 17, we read this curious passage:

"This is my covenant, which you shall keep, between me and you and your offspring after you: Every male among you shall be circumcised. You shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and you." Genesis 17:10-11

"Umm... excuse me Lord... you want me to do... what?!" -- 99 year old Abraham (probably)

In perhaps his greatest act of faith, Abraham circumcises himself, and then the 300+ men of his clan. Talk about commitment. Abraham was all-in with his relationship with God.

Why circumcision? At least part of the answer has to be that God demands ultimate devotion to Himself, especially with the most vulnerable and intimate parts of our lives. For the rest of his life, Abraham would be daily reminded by the external sign, that God demands complete inward devotion. Physical circumcision was also given as a sign of spiritual circumcision, that of the heart. We all, on a daily basis, need our hearts circumcised. The hardness needs to be softened. This happens when we look to the cross of Christ, and realize Jesus obeyed completely. Jesus is all-in with His devotion to us. Are we all-in with our devotion to Him?

With Love,

Pastor Jan
