The most uncomfortable chapter in the Bible
Dear Mosaic Family,
Genesis 19 is definitely the most uncomfortable chapter in the Scriptures. If we're uncomfortable with it, good. We must never let ourselves grow comfortable with sin. Why? Because sin is never satisfied. It always wants more. The main theme of the chapter is the sinister slippery-slope of sin.
In Genesis 13, Lot pitches his tent in the green valley near Sodom. Then he slowly, incrementally, imperceptibly, integrates himself into Sodom's sinful society. In chapter 14, Lot had settled in Sodom. Once there, he becomes so much a part of the community, he's one of the elders, sitting at the city gate, where matters of local government were discussed. He had political authority, but no moral or spiritual authority.
Because of his compromising lifestyle, when it comes time to stand up for righteousness, he has absolutely no authority. When he tries to warn his son-in-laws about the impending judgment, they laugh at him. Even his own wife doesn't follow his warning.
Why is Genesis 19 so uncomfortable? Because Lot had grown comfortable with sin. Sin is restless, ever reaching for more, never satisfied with mere damage to life. It thirsts and hungers to ruin other lives as well.
Lot chose to go down into the valley in pursuit material comfort. Leaves spiritual community. Leaves the Word of God. He kept going down, down, down. Until we find him penniless, wifeless, living in a cave with his two daughters and his two sons, whom he had sired by his own daughters. Destitute. Disgraced. Pathetic shadow of the man he had once been. Yet, we're told later in Scripture, Lot had been saved. He was a Christian. However, he was scarcely saved. The lesson for all Christians here is: you might be saved, and yet live a train wreck of a life, leaving a legacy of destruction. All because you grew comfortable with sin.
Friends, don't grow comfortable with sin.
With Love,
Pastor Jan
