Sarah's Death and Burial

Dear Mosaic Family,

Is "Good Friday in June" not funny to you? It sounds made up like "Christmas in July," right? Or reminiscent of Amazon making up their own Prime Day holiday at a seemingly random time of year (yet perfectly spaced six months away from Christmas)? Regardless of how corny it sounds, the text that we're reading tomorrow is centered on a death, so we're talking about death tomorrow. And there's going to be a weight to it, as we experience on Good Friday. How exciting! Right?

Not thrilled to hear this news? What if I told you that the man considered by many to be the greatest American theologian of all time and, perhaps, the saintliest of men, Jonathan Edwards, resolved to intentionally think about death at least once a week? Some think it morbid, but Edwards found it extremely beneficial to his faith "to think much on all occasions of my own dying, and of the common circumstances which attend death."

You see, when we think about death or encounter it, all of life is put into proper perspective. We enter a valley and we can see everything around us for what it really is and represents. Our thoughts and feelings are real. The fragility of life is made clear and the transitory nature of it apparent. Most of all, we see and feel that death is the most unnatural thing in God's creation. All of our essence rebels against it and tries to flee from it along with all of the thorns and thistles of life that direct our thoughts to it.

But, as we'll discuss tomorrow, Christians don't have to get anxious about death or flee from it. Not just that, we can look right into it and encounter it with courage and hope, and can even laugh at it. What gives us this ability? Come and join us tomorrow to find out, as we close off our Jesus in Genesis series with a message from Genesis 23.

With Love,

Pastor Andy
