Liminal Space

Dear Mosaic Family,

I recently stumbled upon a YouTube documentary about an internet phenomenon that has come to be know as “Liminal Space” or the “Backrooms.” It started with the photograph below, and led to countless people sharing similar photos that for some reason gave them a dreadful sense of familiarity with a place they don’t remember. One quote sums it up like this,

"If you're not careful and you noclip out of reality in the wrong areas, you'll end up in the Backrooms, where it's nothing but the stink of old moist carpet, the madness of mono-yellow, the endless background noise of fluorescent lights at maximum hum-buzz, and approximately six hundred million square miles of randomly segmented empty rooms to be trapped in.“

Yikes! Imagine being trapped in the photo above where around every corner was another seemingly random, empty, and meaningless room. Hour after hour. Day after day.

Now imagine the feeling of relief you would get if someone suddenly broke through the ceiling and pulled you out into the daylight.

In 2 Corinthians 4:6 Paul writes, "For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ."

We were all once lost in the darkness, wandering aimlessly through the backrooms of life, but through the Gospel we’ve been delivered from the kingdom of darkness and brought into the kingdom of light. Now that we’ve been rescued from that darkness, why would we ever go back to living in that liminal space?

Join us this Sunday as we look a 2 Corinthians 6:14-7:1 where Paul continues to plead with this Prodigal Church to remember who they are, to not return from where they came, and to shine the bright light of the Gospel into a world ruled by darkness.

Praying for you!

Pastor Shane
