Jesus in Genesis. Season 2.
Dear Mosaic Family,
Join us tomorrow as we kick off a brand new sermon series in Genesis. We're calling the series "Jesus in Genesis. Season 2." Season 1 took place in 2016, when we studied Genesis chapters 1-11. Tomorrow, we're picking up where we left off, with Genesis 12.
Why study such an ancient text? How in the world can a text written thousands of years ago be relevant for us today? Even asking this question reveals our hidden philosophical bias. Most of us have been taught to understand history through evolutionary theory, which presupposes that history moves from primitive to sophisticated. Influential German scholar, Julius Wellhausen, popularized this view in the 19th century. He argued that Moses could not have written the Pentateuch in the 14th century BC (600 years after Abraham), since "writing had not been invented yet."
We now know this isn't true. The world Abraham lived in was in many ways like our own. His was already an older, mature civilization. Nations carried voluminous international trade. Commerce was regulated and taxed by government bureaucracies. People were widely literate, often in more than one language.
More importantly, although the world has evolved materially, it certainly hasn't evolved spiritually. Abraham inhabited the same spiritual world as we do. He lived in the same spiritual world, with the same principles, laws, opportunities, dangers, promises, temptations, and requirements.
Even more importantly, Genesis is relevant, because it is God's Holy Word, which is timeless, therefore always timely.
With Love,
Pastor Jan
