Newsletter: Yes, God Really Said

Dear Mosaic Family,

The greatest blessing Adam and Eve experienced in the Garden was unfettered access to the presence of God. How could they enjoy this level of intimate fellowship with the Holy God? They too were holy. They were absolutely righteous. Their fellowship with God was contingent upon their continued obedience to His command. How did Satan mastermind the separation of humans from their creator? He undermined God's Word with his own.

The first recorded words of Satan are: “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” (Genesis 3:1). By undermining the Word God commanded Adam, Satan destroyed the fellowship between God and man.

So when the God-Man, King Jesus, the Son of God and Son of Man came to wage war against Satan and his minions, He does so by teaching what God really said. The Religious Establishment of Jesus' day used the same stratagem of Satan in undermining God's Word, except they did it by adding their own rules to God's Commandments. Sometimes Satan undermines God's Commandments by subtraction and sometimes by addition.

Why does Jesus want clarity on what God's Law is? For several reasons: so the law plays the role of a teacher, in teaching us God's standard of Holiness, and our inability to keep it; to show us how great and merciful our God is, who doesn't command anything He Himself didn't keep and then on the cross paid the penalty for our commandment breaking; to show us how to live to experience the greatest level of fellowship with God.

Jesus called his disciples by saying: "follow me" not just where I walk, but how I walk. How did Jesus walk? In perfect heartfelt obedience to the commandments of God. Our relationship with God is conditional only on the work of Christ on our behalf; our fellowship with God is conditional on our loving obedience to His Word.

Jesus said, "You are my friends if you do what I command you." (John 15:14)

The Apostle John writes, "Those who obey God's commandments remain in fellowship with him, and he with them. And we know he lives in us because the Spirit he gave us lives in us." (1 John 3:24 NLT)

Join us Sunday we dive in to
